Portland Terrace Southsea

Flat 4 occupies the top two floors of no. 3 Portland Terrace, part of a grade II listed Victorian terrace designed by Southsea's leading Victorian architect, Thomas Ellis-Owen.

When the client came to us, the flat was a collection of small rooms with a tight enclosed staircase linking the two levels. He wanted to open up the space, bring in more natural light and open up the views from the flat.

The scheme was designed in a contemporary style, with the emphasis on natural light and uninterrupted space.

Part of the upper floor was cut back so that the upper sleeping level became a mezzanine, looking down over the living area.

A new spiral staircase and glass balustrade were fitted, to link the spaces. Rooflights were inserted, which flood the mezzanine and lower level with light and provide views over the rooftops and out to sea.
