New House Southampton

The brief was to design a large family house in a traditional style. The clients had specific requirements and wanted four reception rooms, seven bedrooms, seven bathrooms, a home cinema, wine cellar, gym and sauna. Four of the bedrooms and en-suite bathrooms had to be of equal size, for their four children.

Initially, the clients had asked the architects to design a Queen Anne style house but this had not been favourably received by the planners. The architects then designed this Arts and Crafts style house, and the clients are delighted with the result.

Various techniques were used by the architects to make this large house feel homely. The traditional double-glazed metal windows were set into reconstituted stone sub-frames and all of the joinery was carefully detailed in oak, including the double staircase and balustrading.

A glazed cloister links the house to the garage, gym and wine cellar and creates an intimate courtyard space at the side of the house.
